Shylock and His Victimacy Essay Even thought it seemed like Shylock loved his money more than his daughter, it was still a very cruel thing to do to any one. This is because after harsh words like these you can see why Shylock is so driven to want to kill Antonio. The continuos onslaught of comments towards Shylock, makes him a more sympathetic character. Although this was a cruel thing to do, it was not the worst of the trials that Shylock was put through. After the trial between Shylock and Antonio, Shylock was cheated out of his bond then punished. The party gainst the which he doth contrive shall seize one half his goods, the other half comes to the privy coffer of the state, and the offendertms life lies in mercy(The Merchant of Venice; Act 4, Scene 1; Lines 349-351). Another quote that shows how Shylock was treated was said by Gratiano, O, be thou damned, inexorable dog, And for thy life let justice be accused! Thou almost maktmst me waver in my faith, To hold opinion with Pythagoras that souls of animals infuse themselves into the trunks of men: thy currish spirit governed a wolf, who hanged for human slaughter, Even from the gallows did his feet soul fleet, And whilst thou layest in thy unhallowed dam, Infused itself in thee; for thy desires are wolvish, bloody, starved, and ravenous (The Merchant of Venice; Act 4, Scene 1; Lines 128-138). To really understand Shylock one can not just look at his actions, but it is necessary to see why Shylock did them. Later in the play it is seen that Jessica regrets her decision to leave her father, which shows that it would not have been likely for her to leave without Lorenzo asking her to. My daughter! O my ducats! O my daughter! Fled with a Christian! O my Christian ducats! Justice! The law my ducats, and my daughter! (The Merchant of Venice; Act 2, Scene7; Lines 12-17). It should be said that Jessica, Shylocktms daughter, did leave on her own terms and did steal the ducats from her father, but she would not have done this without the persuasion from Lorenzo. No one should have to convert to a different religion, it is a horrible thing to happen to anyone. The way that Shylock is treated makes it clearer why Shylock is seen as the victim. Shylock lost all of his possessions, he was forced to convert to Christianity, and he almost had to plead for his life.

The Evolution of Rock Music In this essay, I'm going to introduce to the reader a topic not touched a lot because of its complexity and its avoidance by conservative adults. This topic is, of course, Rock Music. During one week, I looked for information in the library and at my house, and from the information I gathered and my one knowledge about the topic, I'm going to lead the reader to a better understanding of Rock n' Roll. I chose to do Rock music because I can identify myself with it. Rock music is very complex. In fact "It's stylistic scope is to broad to be encompassed by any single definition" ("Rock Music", Groliers, p.1). The nearest definition suggests a kind of music that represents and speaks for the teenage society. This music is characterized by using a heavy beat. In this essay, I'm going to divide Rock music into four sections: Rock of the 50's, of the 60's, of the 70's and of the 80's. Within these sections I'm also going to discuss several sub-topics such as famous composers and groups, and characteristics of the music. The first section of this essay is Rock n' Roll of the 1950's, when Rock n' Roll was born. It emerged from rhythm and blues, a music similar to jazz played by blacks. This kind of music started to attract white teenagers. Disc jockey Alan Freed was the one who introduced this music and later gave it the name of Rock n' Roll. Record companies distributed records played by whites but composed by blacks. Whites were frustrated because there weren't any white artists and they didn't want the blacks to be the stars until Bill Haley appeared with his "Rock Around the Clock". In this decade, Elvis Presley introduced a music that was sexual suggestive and outraged dull adults. In time he changed the style of the music by adopting a country and western style and became a national hero. By the end of this decade and the start of the next, Rock n' Roll started to decline because it was formula ridden and it was too sentimental. Teenage audiences transferred their allegiance to Folk music. In 1963 the renewal of Rock n' Roll came when The Beatles started to play. The Beatles, for some the best rock group ever, were from Liverpool, England. Through the 60's, The Beatles dominated the record industries and with their dominant instrumentation, which included: electric leads, rhythm, and bass guitar, drums and sometimes an electric organ, changed the name of Rock n' Roll to just Rock.

The American Dream is true equality and freedom of the citizens of The United States. In Maya Angelou’s I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Marguerite struggles with the thought of feeling unwanted as a child and the discrimination against blacks. As Marguerite grows up, she experiences first-hand the cruelty of racism. Her struggles reflect on all the hardships the citizens of America went through when they were fighting for equality as well. It first started in 1607 when English settlers travelled to America for religious freedom. The freedom they sought out for eventually grew to be something more important than just religious freedom. Marguerite defies authority and segregation and eventually gains the equality she deserves. Even though the era of slavery has ended, segregation between blacks and whites were still present. The town that Marguerite lives in is separated from where the white population is and she barely knows what they are like and she wonders if they are even human. Early on in the story, Marguerite first experiences the cruelty of the local â€Å"powhitetrash† when her family is warned of the white men searching her town for a scapegoat. This causes her Uncle Willie to hide in a potato bin even though he is innocent. In chapter blank, Marguerite watches three white girls mock Momma and she feels anger towards their cruelty and unfairness. As Momma finds her crying in anger, this is the first time she felt the need to defy the white people and fight against them. This encounter foreshadows Marguerite’s future acts of defiance against white people, as the English settlers defied their kind and moves to America. Marguerite’s first true act of defiance was when she was working for a white woman named Viola Cullinan. Mrs. Viola Cullinan is rude and her friends mistreat Marguerite. In order for Marguerite to stop working for her, she broke her prized china. This was a sign of Marguerite finally taking a stand against being mistreated. Her resistance gains Marguerite back her pride and she is getting closer to the freedom that she yearns for. There are times in the story where Marguerite feels an extreme sense of pride for her and her people. At Marguerite’s graduation, a white man named Edward Donleavy degrades the black population by stating that they can only excel in sports. He causes the eighth grade class to feel ashamed of themselves because they feel unintelligent. Marguerite starts to regret the fact that Columbus discovered the new world and she wishes that he hadn’t. She feels so embarrassed, but Henry Reed, the valedictorian of her class brings their spirit back up. He has the crowd sing the Negro National Anthem and as his speech ends, everyone feels great pride swell inside of them. Marguerite feels proud of her heritage and education and ignores what harsh words of Mr. Donleavy. Another time when Marguerite feels proud of the black population is when she envisions Ms. Henderson standing up to Dr. Lincoln. She pictures Ms. Henderson turning into a superhero and scaring Dr. Lincoln. She states that she feels proud to be her granddaughter. The American Dream cannot be fulfilled unless the people have an extreme sense of pride of who they are and their country. Marguerite’s feelings were the start of the journey towards equality between all races. Marguerite first experiences a sense of equality when she attends a school in San Francisco. All the students are rude to her and act as if she is inferior to all of them. On the other hand, Marguerite meets a teacher names Mrs. Kirwin who doesn’t discriminate. She treats every single one of her students the same, no matter what their race is. She only remembers Mrs. Kirwin because she didn’t treat her differently. Marguerite experiences one final act of equality when she runs away from her father. She discovers a mix of young teens consisting of several races working together in equality. They give her certain rules that allow her to appreciate diversity and how everyone is the same. For example, everyone must work and put in an equal amount of effort to survive. Like the American Dream, everyone living in the junkyard is equal and treated fairly. There was no oppression or segregation when Marguerite lived in the junkyard. As it says in The Declaration of Independence, every American citizen is â€Å"endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.† In chapter 19, the Store is filled people listening to the boxing match with Joe Louis, a hero from the black population. When he wins, Marguerite feels that he proved that black people are powerful people. The black population develops a sense of hope, feeling that things will start to change because Joe Louis made a difference and because he is a black man. They feel as if they finally took a stand to all the unjust lynching and discrimination against blacks. Near the end of the story, Marguerite becomes the first black person to have a job as a streetcar conductor. At first, there was a policy forbidding any black person to have this job, but Marguerite fights and against all odds, she is successful. This proves that regardless of social standing, one can achieve what they desire if he or she really wants it. Just as us Americans fought for freedom, Marguerite fought for equality.

The report is done taking into account the Superconducting Super collider project. The research is done taking into account the projects similarities and differences with its European counterpart, the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is done to locate the exact reason for the failure of the American project and the reason behind The European Projects success(George, 2013). From what we can see, the report has made it very clear that both the projects depended on untested technology and were the first of their kinds. While the Superconducting Super collider experiment did not involve any risk analysis before beginning the project, it ended in a failure. However, the Large Hadron Collider was a complete work that included a thorough risk analysis. The report brings to light the fact that the Large Hadron Collider was behind the scheduled time and thus incorporated an EVMS to track the projects cost, schedule and performance(Wysocki, 2014). Although it was not successful in performing what it was meant to do, the team immediately executed their call on contingency process to secure the factors. However, the outcome of the SSC could have been different if it had incorporated a similar risk management strategy. Now, I have found out that the American project was not without a risk analysis plan. It is quite evident from my readings that the project did undergo a risk analysis as it was untested technology that they were using. But from what I have found out, it can be seen that they did not have a backup plan(A guide to the project management body of knowledge, 2013). The moment they were running behind schedule, they put into use some immediate planning which was designed to fail. This is because; those plans were not part of a previous risk analysis plan. The risk analysis plan for the Large Hadron Collider, on the other hand, involved a step by step risk anal ysis procedure that involved a hierarchical process. Under such a planning, the team members of the project were always equipped with a measure in case something went wrong(Wysocki, R. K., 2014). The Semiconducting super collider project, on the other hand, did not possess any such step by step process which made them unclear with what to do in case something went wrong. Thus, they made immediate plans which were not always in accordance with the problems that really arose at those points. As a result, the experiment faced such a failure. The report is about the utilization of different standards based on their utility. The report takes into account the two standards, PRINCE2 and the PEMBOK which are the standards used in the UK and the USA respectively(CTE Solutions Inc., 2014). The two standards have for long been utilized to create a framework for the organizations that are new and need some sort of instruction manual on how should one proceed. As the report rightly points out, the PEMBOK is an effective standard but it is limited to only the US owing to its certain limitations(Sunohara, 2011). As a result, the report states that the PEMBOK is an effective solution for organizations that aim at growing not only their business but also their client base and goodwill among the customers. Although PRINCE2 is easy to follow and can be used for upcoming industries who need an easy methodology for their various functions, the report does point out th e fact that the contemporary society is a complex sphere that comprises of a diverse mix and eventually, all organizations need to shift to the PEMBOK standard. From what I know, the PRINCE2 is an easy method that follows the regular processes. That is to say, the PRINCE2 is a system that measures the degree of safety and health associated with the process of manufacturing and delivering them to the clients (PRINCE2 methodology, 2014). However, it does not take into account if the purpose of the product or service is fulfilled. As a result, I can say that the method is an easy one to follow in the case of setting up something. But the PEMBOK standard is something far more precise (PMBOX vs PRINCE2 vs Agile project management, 2011). This is because, from what I can understand, PEMBOK follows a strict utility and quality standard that is not easy to follow.
